Birmingham City Hall was flooded with Deontay Wilder’s hometown crowd today. They had come to see their very own Heavyweight world champion on stage 24-hours before his encounter with challenger Eric Molina.
Wilder looked the more athletic of the two fighters when stood face to face, and came in at a trim 229 pounds. His opponent Eric Molina was the slightly heavier man at 239 1/4.
This isn’t exactly a pick’ em fight, but it’s a huge occasion for the people of Alabama. Wilder vs Molina is now a sell out, with the Bartow Arena to be filled to its 8508 seat capacity.
SHOWTIME camera’s caught all the weigh-in action:
If the pre-fight script is to be trusted, we can all expect Wilder to take Molina out in the early rounds. It’s not the kind of fight the Heavyweight needs – or boxing for that matter following Lara vs Rodriguez – but it will go down a storm with Wilder’s partisan crowd.
It should, however, hopefully lead to some big Heavyweight fights in latter part of 2015/early 2016. A match-up like Wilder vs Tyson Fury or Wladimir Klitschko would be warmly welcomed by most fight fans.
Give us your two cents on Wilder vs Molina and who the Alabama champ will be targeting next.
