Welterweight: Legends & History
While the Welterweight division is believed to have been created in the late 19th century, it was officially recognized in 1909 with a 147 lbs limit. Sitting between the modern era’s Junior Welterweight (140 lbs) and Junior Middleweight (154), Welter is one of boxing’s original classic eight ‘glamour divisions’.
Welterweight is renowned for its potent balance of power and speed, and has a habit of churning out marquee names and crossover superstars, especially in the modern era. With fame and spoils aplenty, it is no wonder, then, that the division generally remains fiercely competitive and closely watched.
Some of the greatest Welterweight boxers of all time include the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Pernell Whitaker, Zab Judah, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Robinson.
