Peterson-Diaz - Lamont Peterson squeaks by with Majority Decision against Felix DiazThe weekend held plentiful boxing action for fight fans, beginning on Friday night with Fonfara-Cleverly, and ending at the sold out Madison Square Garden’s Golovkin-Lemieux. For any readers chasing a quick roundup of the biggest bouts, here’s what you missed:

October 17th

Peterson-Diaz

At the EagleBank Arena, Fairfax, Lamont Peterson squeaked past then-unbeaten Felix Diaz, landing a – very lucky? – Majority Decision off scores of 114-114, 116-112, 117-111. I for one expected Diaz, who gave away four inches in height, to struggle greatly with Peterson. Boy was I wrong there.

Diaz proved more than worthy of hanging with Peterson, catching the former champ with heavy blows on the ropes, and with close-range counters. Peterson landed his fair share of blows too, notably those to the body, and of course some unforgettable flashy hit-and-pivot uppercuts and hooks. Golovkin-Lemieux, Gonzalez-Viloria

In the weekend’s biggest fight, boxing masters Gennady Golovkin and Roman Gonzalez dealt out an overwhelming amount of punishment in their championship bouts. Golovkin was expected to perhaps be tested somewhat against hard-hitting David Lemieux, but received little return fire in the 8-round clinic. Golovkin coupled his power with world-class boxing skills, dulling Lemieux’s offense while picking him off with sickening blows.

Lemieux was game, landed a few solid power shots, but enjoyed the most success with the jab. But all the while eating Golovkin’s ram-rod jab, monster right-hands and methodical combinations, en route to being finally saved by the referee in the 8th round. Lemieux showed his mettle by surviving a 5th round knockdown from a body shot, but was ultimately outclassed in Madison Square Garden, New York. For what it’s worth, scorecards going into the 8th round stood at 70-62 (thrice).

In the co-feature, Roman Gonzalez did a similar number on capable, highly ranked Brian Viloria, stopping the Hawaiian in the 9th. After analyzing Viloria for the first two rounds, WBC champ Gonzalez began unloading with lightning combinations. Viloria quickly became out of his depth, suffering a 3rd round knockdown off a right-hand, but remained poised and game, to his credit. Post fight, there was nothing but respect between the two Flyweights, which was great to see. Viloria was in awe of Gonzalez’s flawless victory, as were we. 78-73 (twice) and 79-72 was on the scorecards going into the 9th.
