Yeah, I can’t really believe this one either. In fact, I’m not sure what news is more depressing today: that the WBC thinks highly enough of Garcia vs Guerrero to offer up their world title to the victor, or that Kell Brook will be making another soft defense.
Perhaps there’s a case for Danny Garcia (despite him having fought only once at Welterweight) due to his supremacy at Junior Welterweight – but Robert Guerrero? Seriously?
Look, I’ve got nothing against the guy, but this seems awfully reminiscent of another recent needless world title encounter. Anyone remember the Broner vs Allakhverdiev farce? The fight which offered ‘The Problem’ a shot at landing the vacant WBA crown despite losing to Shawn Porter beforehand?
Guerrero may have looked strong when he beat up Andre Berto back in 2012, but his outings have been rather lacklustre since. The man, known as ‘The Ghost’, is as gutsy as they come, sure, but one-sided losses to Floyd Mayweather (forgivable) and Keith Thurman, plus beating fringe contenders Yoshihiro Kamegai and Aaron Martinez, shouldn’t open the door to a world title shot.
Since this is a sport where only the best fighters are supposed to meet to decide who leaves with the ‘coveted world title’, I must now cringe while slapping my forehead several times.
I’ll finish by adding that the WBC’s mandatory challenger for the Garcia vs Guerrero winner will be Amir Khan. Word of warning: it could be dangerous to hold your breath for Khan vs either man or any Top 10 Welterweight challenger (unless their names are Mayweather or Pacquiao).
Fight fans – if you care enough – please spill your thoughts below. Or, if you need more motivation, how about this for a fun topic to discuss: what if Guerrero does the unthinkable, takes Garcia into the trenches, and finds himself wearing the WBC belt? Boxing fans’ chins drop to the floor! The first major upset of 2016! Insanity!
