Ahead of Thurman vs Collazo, Welterweight contender Keith Thurman has revealed Amir Khan’s scalp was the more desired for this weekend. (Let’s not even get into why Khan and his team didn’t want that fight, let alone mention the ‘M word’…)
Thurman told Boxing Channel/Fight Hub he’s looking to reach another gear in the sport physically and mentally. He’s also looking to hurt Collazo, and is thrilled to be staging the event in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.
Going into the clash, 26-year-old Thurman is 25-0, 21 KO, and 34-year-old Collazo 36-6, 19 KO. Thurman will be perhaps gunning to score a big knockout after (undeservedly) receiving criticism for not stopping his last two opponents, Leonard Bundu and Robert Guerrero. When you carry an 81% knockout ratio in boxing, it turns out it can sometimes be a curse. The rising star did score knockdowns and lopsided decisions in both bouts, however.
Collazo, a solid 147-pounder and former champion, will be looking to upset the upcoming, hungry ‘One Time’. Though Collazo knocked out a prime Victor Ortiz back in January 2014, the likelihood of the New Yorker winning doesn’t look too great. Following his shutout loss to Amir Khan in May 2014, it’s vital Collazo at least looks competitive if he plans on remaining in more high-brow future events.
Here’s what Thurman had to say:
