German Fans Warming to Tyson Fury
Well, it depends on how you look at it. Tyson Fury, who landed in Germany yesterday, feels he already has the country’s support after a number of fight fans asked for autographs and photographs. The brazen Brit will collide with Wladimir Klitschko this weekend.
“I had a great reception off the Brits travelling, wherever they are going to work on Monday morning, and I have had a lot of German fans coming over to me as well, having photographs,” Fury told Sky Sports.
“So it is a mixed group of people and I feel fantastic to be over here now. We are in the Christmas season and we are all going to have a very, very good Christmas.”
Or couldn’t it just be that fight fans like to collect boxing memorabilia, regardless of their personal feelings? No! Don’t be absurd – Tyson Fury’s charisma and sheer brilliance has turned Klitschko’s followers against him!
“You know what I believe?” Fury continued. “I’m getting the feeling that the German people want a new champion, they don’t want Klitschko any more, they have had enough of him. The time is a new time for a new change, and that new change is this man!”
George Groves Back in Action January 30th
One of Britain’s best boxer-punchers and nearly-men will be back in the ring on January 30th, 2016. George Groves, 27, will be fighting on a London card, with a new trainer in tow, confirmed Matchroom Boxing and Sauerland Promotions in a recent press release.
Groves, who’s suffered three back-to-back defeats over the past two years, will be replacing Paddy Fitzpatrick with a yet to be named trainer. Groves picked up his first loss (Carl Froch, TKO 9) under Adam Booth, and his second and third (Froch, TKO 8, Badou Jack, SD 12) under Fitzpatrick.
Headlining the January card will be John Wayne Hibbert as he makes the first defense of his Commonwealth title against undefeated Tommy Martin. Although Grove’s opponent is yet to be announced, Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn has some ideas of his own.
“Although Groves is keen to challenge for another world title as soon as possible, I’m sure Kalle [Sauerland] will discuss the likes of Martin Murray, Callum and Paul Smith as potential opponents for next year,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
A Groves vs Callum Smith encounter would be the most salivating, of course, but a Martin Murray showdown would also stir up considerable interest in the boxing fandom. Murray, another great nearly-man, came up short in his fourth world title fight against Arthur Abraham at the weekend.
Groves vs Murray would be a financially rewarding domestic tear up – not bad for two fighters with a record of 0-7 on the world stage.
What’s your take on Tyson Fury’s talk of turning German boxing fans, plus the return of George Groves?
