Super Middleweight: Legends & History
The Super Middleweight division, established in 1967 with a limit of 168 lbs, satisfied a bridging of the gap between Middleweight (160 lbs) and Light Heavyweight (175). Over the next couple of decades it steadily gained momentum and recognition with audiences.
The division received wider acclaim and popularity in the 1990s, with a vibrant scene developing, perhaps most notably on British and Irish soil were classic rivalries were born and settled. In more recent times the division has featured in the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournaments, and remains a fan favorite today.
Some of the greatest Super Middleweight boxers of all time include the likes of Joe Calzaghe, Mikkel Kessler, Carl Froch, Andre Ward, Roy Jones Jr, Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Steve Collins, James Toney and Chong-Pal Park.
