It looked like Sergio Mora and Daniel Jacobs were going to produce a barn-burner on the Garcia vs Malignaggi card last weekend. The 34-year-old Mora, who was tipped as a big underdog in this fight, raised eyebrows in just the 1st round. Mora was dropped to the canvas – which seemed to be expected – but immediately evened the score by knocking down Jacobs. What a round. And what a fight this was shaping up to be…

But then Mora was dropped again in the 2nd. The question: was it a fractured ankle or Jacob’s fist that did the dropping? Mora managed to beat the count, with his senses looking intact, but the fight was called off as he limped along the ropes. The official fight result (right or wrong): Jacobs via 2nd round TKO.
Mora gave RingTV’s Michael Woods his own version of events, how he feels about the verdict, and (his conqueror?) Jacobs.
“I have a fractured right ankle, Michael,” Mora said. “I expected to get hurt. I expected to hurt him. I expected it goes into later rounds. I got two out of three. I was prepared for 12 rounds. He [Jacobs] was glad and relieved the fight was over.
“I was just getting started. A champ doesn’t celebrate empty victories. Man, I was so ready to win that title, man, it’s a shame it ended like that. I would have beaten him, through attrition and with experience.”
Mora said he heard a loud pop as he went down: that being his right ankle. The majority of boxing fans are likely empathizing with not just Mora’s injury, but his plight for a rematch. Unfortunately for him, Jacobs nor PBC will have any plans to stage a rematch.
But if Jacobs is the over-hyped fighter Mora insists he is, we will likely find out should Jacobs take on Middleweight elite Peter Quillin in late 2015. Quillin was last in action against Andy Lee in April, which saw both men fight to a draw.
Give us your take on Sergio Mora’s performance and subsequent injury. Was this is a TKO victory for Daniel Jacobs? Or should it be declared a No Contest?
