Ronda Rousey is the darling of UFC, which is, something like, another form of pugilism known as MMA. Mixed Martial Arts, or something like that, I believe. (Just a joke! No hate, MMA fans!).
But now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Rousey is accomplished and highly revered in the octagon, but what business does she have featuring on the cover of ‘The RING’ magazine? And, alongside the tagline: ‘She conquered MMA. Is boxing next?’
No one knows why per se, but here’s a few tidbits of information to mull over.
‘The RING’ magazine is owned by Golden Boy Promotions, which is owned by Oscar De La Hoya, who has also struck up some good rapport with UFC president Dana White over the years.
So what? Well, just read into it a little and make some assumptions, people. Whatever they may be. It would seem Rousey’s business featuring on the cover is…well, for business. And most likely to antagonise ‘The RING’ readers and get them talking about Rousey, MMA, and…stuff.
‘The RING’ is no doubt looking for a reaction. And I’m pretty sure that’s not too far reaching, given the magazine has been known as ‘The Bible of Boxing’ since 1922.
For fun, here’s a few ideas about why Rousey’s face will be appearing on shelves. Some reasons are realistic, some not – I’ll let you decide for yourself.
Golden Boy Promotions is about to:
- (or already has) buy large stocks in the UFC
- change ‘The RING’ to ‘The RING-OCTAGON’! – catchy, right?
- start co-promoting Rousey’s MMA career
- start promoting Rousey’s shock career move to boxing
- do what Mayweather wouldn’t – stage the first regulated ‘Man vs Woman’ fight for Rousey (with De La Hoya making a comeback!)
What do you think? Is ‘The RING’ about to face a backlash from its readership – and actual cover-worthy boxers who, er…box? And also – because it’s worth entertaining the idea – is Ronda Rousey about to switch the octagon for the squared circle?
