Mosley vs Mayorga II is one of the year’s most unanticipated match-ups. Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga have a combined age of 84, not to mention the asking price is $49.95 for anyone willing to pay for it. Throw in the rehearsed fight at the pair’s final press conference – cue forehead slap – and this thing has disappointment written all over it.
EsNews cameras caught all the action:
But it doesn’t end there. At The Forum, California, both former champions failed to make the agreed upon 159 pound limit. Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KO) came in at 159.4 which, in fairness, is forgivable. Not exactly a huge problem. But Ricardo Mayorga (31-8-1, 25 KO) trumped his opponent’s failure by coming in at a staggering 165.4. According to some sources, Mayorga could now be fined $50,000 for his faux-pas.
But then again you have to wonder if (unless you’re a die-hard Mosley/Mayorga follower) any boxing fans really care? In the fighters’ heydays, Mosley was an exceptional talent, and Mayorga certainly solid and entertaining. But watching these guys trying to rekindle their careers in their forties is just sad and unfortunate.
The problematic weigh-in and greedy price tag will likely steer fans of pugilism towards a more competitive fight this weekend. And one that will cost them nada. We’re of course talking about Santa Cruz vs Mares, a fight that promises to be a lot more eventful than Mosley vs Mayorga II.
If you can bring yourself to comment on the veteran weigh-in, we respect your strength and willpower.
