Mayweather Loses Another One
Floyd Mayweather has been stripped of The Ring’s Junior Middleweight title. We’re sure the pound for pound king, who was stripped of his WBO 147 pound title recently for not paying the sanctioning fee, will be truly devastated.
Mmm. Or not…
Mayweather won the belt just under two years ago by handing Canelo Alvarez his first loss. But since Mayweather hasn’t scheduled a 154 pound fight for some time, The Ring was forced to strip him of the belt. The Ring’s policy states that a champion will be stripped of a division’s title if he fails to schedule another fight at that weight within 18 months.
Again, Mayweather won’t be sobbing into his pillow at the news, exactly. To be honest, will anyone else? What’s a belt in boxing, these days?
Sticking on the subject of The Ring titles – act like you’re interested – Danny Garcia has decided to voluntarily relinquish his 140 pound variety. The undefeated fighter, who has now jumped up to Welterweight, won the belt against Amir Khan back in 2012. Garcia then defended it once (the other bouts were at a catchweight) against Mauricio Herrera 18 months ago.
Mayweather Out – Pacquiao In?
With the Mayweather fight dead in the water for Amir Khan, Bob Arum has been making a lot of noise about a Manny Pacquiao match-up. Interesting. Arum, who promotes Pacquiao under Top Rank, has said he’d be very willing to make Khan-Pacquiao happen in 2016 after Pacquiao’s shoulder is healed up.
“This kid Amir Khan keeps shooting his mouth off about Manny Pacquiao,” Arum told The Telegraph. “I can arrange for Khan to fight Pacquiao. Amir Khan has been begging Mayweather for a fight and now he can get a major fight. I’m not a hard guy to deal with. I’m not going to mess them around.”
Arum is scheduled to discuss a potential clash this week with Khan’s team, one which the promoter will be hoping to stage somewhere in the Middle East. Arum said he knows one or two groups there who’ve already expressed interest in such a fight, and insists he is serious about making the bout a reality.
“We’re not dangling [an offer for Khan like Mayweather did]. I want to go in and make a deal with the guy,” Arum continued. “I’m happy to have lunch with them and discuss the situation.”
Would Khan-Pacquiao really be as scintillating as it sounds? Are you thinking ‘make the fight happen!’ – or something more along the lines of, ‘maybe a couple of years back…’? Also, what of Mayweather’s belt-stripping by The Ring? Bothered?
