Lightweight: Legends & History
The Lightweight division, believed to be regarded in pugilism since 1738, originally carried a limit of 160 lbs. This figure was later lowered to 140 in 1889, however, and eventually settled at 135 two decades later in 1909.
As with the sport’s other ‘classic eight’ divisions, Lightweight is rich in history courtesy of its revered champions, classic dustups, and striking skill sets witnessed inside the ring. Popular with fans to this day, Lightweight remains a marble pillar of boxing’s architecture.
Some of the greatest Lightweight boxers of all time include the likes of Roberto Duran, Pernell Whitaker, Ken Buchanan, Henry Armstrong, Ike Williams, Packey McFarland, Tony Cazoneri, Benny Leonard, Carlos Ortiz and Joe Gans.
