Heavyweight: Legends & History
The Heavyweight division began with no specific weight for its combatants, with many weighing 170 lbs or less in the 19th century. It would later implement a minimum of 175 lbs in 1920, however (as Light Heavyweight, a division south, was introduced).
As Heavyweights became larger, and following the addition of a Cruiserweight division in 1979, the bar was raised again to 190 lbs, and finally 200 in 2004. Often referred to as the sport’s ‘glamour division’ (due to boxers’ great size and power), Heavyweight has long captivated audiences and remains highly lucrative and commercial.
Some of the greatest Heavyweight boxers of all time include the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey.
