Our Haye vs de Mori Winner poll has now run its course, readers. First off, thanks for all your votes! We can now reveal that former Heavyweight champ David Haye came out on top – which, all right, seemed kind of a given ever since this was bout was announced last November.
But it should be known that Haye didn’t exactly win by a landslide here. In fact, it looks like de Mori, an obscure Heavyweight contender, may be in with a chance according to the votes. Now I’m really starting to doubt my own prediction for this matchup…
63% of Boxing Base readers said Haye would have his hand raised at the end of the night at the O2 Arena, London, with outsider de Mori receiving an impressive 37%. Anyone as surprised by this result as I am?
Of course, there’s some obvious and valid reasons behind the theory that de Mori could be about to pull off the first major upset of 2016. Haye’s four year absence from the ring means he’ll be bringing plenty of ring rust along for the ride. And his injury-plagued shoulder has a bunch of question marks buzzing around it.
At 35, time, plus wear and tear, are an even greater enemy to Haye than they ever have been. ‘Time doesn’t wait for anyone’ plus a bunch of other wistful lines come to mind. De Mori is two years Haye’s junior and has fought eleven times during Haye’s long layoff. In short, anything can happen in boxing (but make no mistake, I’m backing the Hayemaker!).
