Before headliner Golovkin vs Lemieux got underway at Madison Square Garden, New York, Gonzalez vs Viloria unfolded in front of the sold out arena. Brian Viloria managed to nick the first couple of rounds on Boxing Base’s scorecard, but soon came under attack from the blistering combinations of Roman Gonzalez.
Viloria was saved from further punishment in the 9th following a barrage of hurt from Gonzalez. This was a merciful stoppage by the referee, and shouldn’t be disputed. Boxing Base had it 78-73 going into the 9th.
Viloria held his own until the 5th, but was simply no match for Gonzalez who, as always, put on a masterclass of high-pressure boxing. It was stunning, to say the least. Gonzalez had to work for the stoppage, of course, which is testament to Viloria’s toughness, but will not have slipped from his Pound for Pound No.1 status. It was, after all, a dominating, one-sided encounter.
Gonzalez, who retained his RING and WBC Flyweight titles, now improves to a perfect 44 wins, no defeats, 38 knockouts, 36 wins, 4 defeats, 22 knockouts. Viloria leaves the Garden with 36 wins, 22 knockouts, 4 defeats.
