Tureano Johnson vs Eamonn O’Kane
At Madison Square Garden, New York, Eamonn O’Kane put in a tremendous, brave effort in his 12-round IBF Middleweight Eliminator with Tureano Johnson. But it wasn’t enough. While both men likely matched each other’s punch output, it was Johnson’s higher quality work that shone through.
The action-packed, close-quarter battle immediately picked up a frantic pace in just the 1st round. Johnson found big defensive holes in an aggressive O’Kane right away, knocking down his foe twice courtesy of thudding, accurate hooks. But O’Kane recovered well on both occasions, refusing to change his high-pressure game plan.
And so it went on. O’Kane pressuring, forcing Johnson back on to the ropes, but being picked off all night long. It was a great scrap for the Golovkin vs Lemieux undercard, nonetheless, and certainly a tasty apetiser before the headliner arrives.
Johnson now improves to 19 wins, 13 knockouts, 1 defeat, while O’Kane drops to 14 wins, 5 knockouts, 2 defeats, 1 draw.
Luis Ortiz vs Matias Vidondo
Luis Ortiz needed just two and a bit rounds to dispatch of Matias Vidondo. But, you know, it was expected. After a cautious opener, Ortiz started to let rip, demonstrating flashy handspeed, and of course, vaunted power. In the 2nd round, Ortiz knocked Vidondo back into the ropes, then dropped him with a left as he rebounded. Kind of akin to a wrestling move – but you know, with real violence.
Vidondo somehow regained his footing and saw out the round, only to be flattened by another left in the opening seconds of the 3rd. And the guy went down hard, of course prompting the referee to rightly call of the one-sided affair.
Luis Ortiz now builds to 22 wins, 19 knockouts, no defeats, while Vidondo falls to 20 wins, 18 knockouts, 1 defeat, 1 draw.
