Golovkin vs Brook is set to unfold this weekend, and while it’s not the Middleweight showdown fans were craving, it’s still tasty enough to fuel curiosity. Gennady Golovkin had wanted Canelo Alvarez, and Kell Brook merely a live body inside the Welterweight Top 10. Boxing has a habit of serving up dishes its customers never ordered, however, and Golovkin vs Brook is what we’ll be consuming this weekend.
In terms of overall abilities in the ring, there’s nothing to scoff at in this matchup taking center stage at the O2 Arena, London. Both fighters are considered elites of their craft, holding the numero uno spots in their respective weight divisions. But there’s no mistaking the elephant in the room here: Brook is travelling from 147 to 160 pounds for the first time in his career. Not against a gatekeeper or solid veteran, but dynamite puncher GGG himself.
While big names and skills are at play, this matchup certainly tastes a little bitter. But it at least seems a lot more appealing than May’s underdog tale Canelo vs Amir Khan, mainly due to Brook being a notably bigger Welterweight and puncher than his countryman rival. Can Brook rise to the challenge and strip Golovkin of his unified WBA and IBF titles? We’ll soon see.
Let’s get cracking into the fight night particulars.
