If you find yourself asking ‘Gary who?’, don’t worry – you’re not in the minority. Gary O’Sullivan is the guy who’ll be trading punches with Chris Eubank Jr on the Joshua-Whyte card on December 12th.
The Middleweight contender, whose only real marquee fight came against Billy Joe Saunders (loss, UD 12) back in 2013, is supremely confident, however. And yeah, the 31-year-old is predicting exactly what most boxing fans and odds makers alike aren’t: a KO shocker.
Hey, bigger upsets have happened in boxing, I guess.
“He’s over-hyped,” O’Sullivan told Sky Sports. “He’s a good fighter. I’d be stupid to think he wasn’t but he’s not a great fighter. I’m a great fighter and I will knock him out. I’m over the moon, enjoying every minute of the build-up and I can’t wait to get in there on December 12.
“I think he’s got there because of his father and the help of Sky. It’s great promotion for him but I’m so confident in beating him because I’ve seen weaknesses there. I’ve watched a lot of his fights. I carry the power. When I hit him, I’m just going to knock him out.”
If O’Sullivan’s prediction were to come true, he would be the second man to beat Eubank, and the first to via knockout victory. The first fighter to get the job done was of course Billy Joe Saunders last November, who out-boxed Eubank for the most part en route to a Split Decision.
“Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs fight for the WBA title and the winner between me and Chris go on to fight the winner,” O’Sullivan continued. “I can’t wait to fulfil my destiny and go on to become the middleweight champion of the world. I can’t wait.”
It all sounds a little premature to be talking of world title aspirations, but boxer’s have to highly ambitious, so who can blame the guy? As for either man’s chances against the likes of Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs, I’d prefer to not comment right now.
Let’s just see how good/bad the winner of Chris Eubank Jr vs Gary O’Sullivan looks on December 11th. We’ll soon get an idea of what each man is capable of bringing to the world stage.
