This week’s TV Boxing Schedule isn’t going to blow your mind, but there’s enough decent scraps and big names involved to warrant your interest, with the Garcia vs Guerrero card topping the bill. Let’s get straight to it and round up the action:
January 19th
Jamal James vs Javier Molina
Undercard: David Benavidez vs Kevin Cobbs
Fox Sports 1
Jamal James (18-0, 9 KO) vs Javier Molina (17-1, 8 KO) will headline the night’s action, and with both men considered good Welterweight prospects we shouldn’t be scoffing at this one. James is the favorite, but is in with an opponent who shouldn’t be taken lightly.
James is coming in off a Unanimous Decision against Juan Carlos Abreu last September, and Molina a 7th round Retirement of Lenwood Dozier in October. For Molina to remain competitive, he’ll have to negate a daunting height disadvantage (Jamal stands five inches taller at 6’ 2”).
Light Heavyweights David Benavidez (11-0, 10 KO) and Kevin Cobbs (10-1, 4 KO) will provide chief support.
January 22nd
Rob Brant vs Decarlo Perez
Undercard: Harmonito Dela Torre vs Rafael Guzman, Jarrell Miller vs Donovan Dennis, Bakhtiyar Eyubov vs Jared Robinson
SHO
A showcase of upcoming talent, with Middleweight upstart Rob Brant (18-0, 11 KO) set to take on Decarlo Perez (15-3-1, 5 KO). Brant isn’t necessarily the best prospect on the card, and will be joined by Harmonito Dela Torre (17-0, 12 KO) vs Rafael Guzman (28-3-1, 20 KO) at Lightweight, Jarrell Miller (15-0-1, 13 KO) vs Donovan Dennis (12-2-0, 10 KO) at Heavyweight, and Bakhtiyar Eyubov (9-0, 9 KO) vs Jared Robinson (16-2-1, 7 KO) at Junior Middleweight.
January 23rd
Joseph Parker vs Jason Bergman
Sky Arena (NZ)
New Zealand’s unbeaten Heavyweight Joseph Parker (17-0, 15 KO) will be taking on another non-contender in Jason Bergman (25-11-2, 16 KO) to edge closer to a big time international name.
Dominic Boesel vs Balazs Kelemen
MDR (Deu)
Dominic Boesel (20-0, 7 KO) is a German Light Heavyweight prospect who will be taking on a durable yet aging Balazs Kelemin (24-1, 13 KO).
Danny Garcia vs Robert Guerrero
Undercard: Sammy Vasquez Jr vs Aron Martinez, Dominic Breazeale vs Amir Mansour
Fox
Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KO) continues to slowly climb the Welterweight ladder by taking on the rough and ready, unrefined Robert Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KO). On paper, this looks like an absolute mismatch, but considering Guerrero came back from a knockdown to finish strong against Keith Thurman, ‘The Ghost’ deserves a fair shake. It’s true Guerrero is slipping further towards obscurity these days, but his iron will might allow him to hang in there for the full 12. Oh, and the vacant WBC title will be on the line.
Sammy Vasquez Jr (20-0, 14 KO) carries a solid, prettier looking record, but Aron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KO) is a spirited customer who has been defying expectations lately. Martinez scored a big upset by overwhelming Devon Alexander in October, and probably should have got the nod against headliner Robert Guerrero in June. It will be interesting to see if Martinez can ask any questions of Vasquez, or whether his underdog story is about to swiftly end.
Also in action will be Heavyweight contender Dominic Breazeale (16-0, 14 KO) who is set to clash with Amir Mansour (22-1-1, 16 KO). Even though Mansour, 43, is 13 years older than unbeaten prospect, Breazeale, this bout could be a tasty appetiser. Mansour has enough experience and power to make this a tough fight, and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Adrian Estrella vs Alfonso Lopez
Undercard: Carlos Molina vs Jose Agustin Feria
Televisia (Mex)
Adrian Estrella (24-1, 22 KO) will be facing Alfonso Lopez (11-7, 8 KO) at Lightweight, with Carlos Molina (23-6-2, 7 KO) and Jose Agustin Feria (20-2-1, 13 KO) providing chief support at Middleweight.
Jose Zepeda vs Ammeth Diaz
Undercard: Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr vs Jhon Gemino
Azteca (Mex)
Jose Zepeda (23-1, 20 KO) will be trading leather with Ammeth Diaz (32-12, 23 KO) at Lightweight, with Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr (20-4-1, 9 KO) and Jhon Gemino (12-5-1, 5 KO) clashing at Junior Featherweight in the chief support.
What are your fight predictions for Garcia vs Guerrero and the rest of the week’s boxing action? Will the A-sides triumph across the board? Or is there an upset or two lurking?
