Errol Spence isn’t yet a household name, but the Welterweight prospect could be the contender on everyone’s lips come September 11th. The 25-year-old Texan, who has won all of his 17 fights, 14 by knockout, is set to feature on the Stevenson vs Karpency card, Toronto.
His scheduled opponent, according to promoter Tyon Michel, will be Chris Van Heerden. The 28-year-old Californian holds a record of 23-1-1, 12 knockouts. And yeah, even without digging deep into this fight’s potential, it looks to be a lot more competitive than the dreadful headliner.
“I’m excited to get back in the ring in September with another opportunity to fight on the big stage” Spence told ESPN.com. “I’ve been putting in the work every day and I’m looking forward to a tough challenge. I’m ready for anybody.”
Spence wiped the floor with late stand-in opponent Phil Lo Greco in June, which was to be expected. Spence, one of boxing’s hottest commodities, has been dazzling audiences with his eye-catching prowess and power since 2012, and will be facing a capable fighter in Heerden.
Not that Spence should have too much to deal with in this fight. Heerden may ask a question or two, but the favorite is expected to dismantle this stepping stone and land a title shot by early 2016. Promoter Michel sees the fight a little differently, of course:
“We are very happy to have Spence versus Van Heerden as the televised co-feature on our Sept 11th event in Toronto,” Michel said. “They are two of the most talented Welterweights in the world. This match-up has all of the makings of an exciting, explosive, fan-friendly fight.”
Exciting, explosive, fan-friendly – let’s hope the man’s right. You can catch Errol Spence vs Chris Van Heerden (and Stevenson vs Karpency…meh) on PBC on Spike, September 11th.
