If you’re a fan of boxer-punchers Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg, you’ll be pleased to know negotiations are very healthy, according to Eddie Hearn. The Matchroom Boxing chief, who promotes WBA champ Quigg, has been in serious talks with IBF champ Frampton’s promoter, Cyclone Promotions.
“I don’t give up on any fights,” Hearn told Boxing News. “All of a sudden there’s one conversation and the whole thing can turn on a sixpence. All you need in those kind of negotiations is a little bit of rope to go back to the fighter and say, ‘He’s given in on that, I need you to give in on that,’ and all of a sudden you’re on a roll. Then people start sniffing it, and you suddenly think, ‘This could get made here.’ I’m really confident that fight will get made in February.”
If Frampton vs Quigg becomes a reality as early as February next year, it would please boxing fans well beyond Manchester and Ireland. Sky Sports are poised to jump on this thing, with their PPV stamp at the ready. But in an all honesty, I don’t think many boxing fans would care too much. Throw in a half decent undercard and I’d gladly shell out to see this unification fight. Just don’t ask me to pick a winner.
“It’s very close, very close,” said Hearn. “That’s a fight that we’re looking at for January or February. If the Klitschko-Fury fight had been moved to February, which is another part of the jigsaw, it would have ruled that fight out. But the news that Klitschko can fight in November means Quigg-Frampton is very close now; it’s beyond 50-50 in terms of likelihood. I really think it will happen in February.”
Is this one of the most anticipated mega fights out there? Who would you be picking in Frampton vs Quigg, and could we be about to see a dustup in February? Or will the business end of boxing eventually hold back such a high risk fight for both boxers?
