Deontay Wilder wants to clear up championship confusion by unifying the Heavyweight divisionBoxing is full of seemingly pointless accolades, also known as world titles, or those shiny things belts far too many fighters wear around their waists. And it seems that Deontay Wilder shares the same feeling, or at least, that matters could be simplified if he were to unify the Heavyweight division’s belts.

“All these belts are starting to get ridiculous,” Wilder told World Boxing News. “There are so many belts and people get so confused about who’s this champion? What’s that champion? What this belt is? – And it’s confusing.

“… I think it would be a great thing to just have one heavyweight champion of the world, once and for all. Not all WBC, IBF and all that champion of the world, especially for the heavyweight division – which is the cream of the crop.

Cream of the crop? Mmm…if you say so, Deontay.

Wilder, who currently holds the WBC variety, considers his trophy to be the most prestigious of them all, and would like nothing better than to dethrone the winner of Klitschko vs Fury (who will soon become the owner of the remaining IBF, WBA, WBO, IBO titles).

“I have the most legit belt in all of boxing,” Wilder continued. “The most precious, most well-known belt. You know a lot of people want to say that Wladimir is the champion. Yeah, he’s a champion, of course because he has the rest of the belts, but I’m the WBC heavyweight champ and every fighter who wants to be champion wants the WBC belt.

“Even Wladimir – he wants the WBC title. The only thing different between me and him is that he has many belts, but I have the most important belt and it think it would make the division that much better to have one unified champion.”

Chime in with your own thoughts on Deontay Wilder’s words. Is it too bold a statement coming from someone who has fought two opponents outside of the Top 10 recently? And finally, are you a lover or hater of boxing’s alphabet soup? (And if the answer’s ‘lover’, then please back up your argument…)
