Cruiserweight: Legends & History
The Cruiserweight division was introduced in 1979 for ‘smaller Heavyweight’ boxers who could no longer compete with the expanding frames of modern Heavyweights. Cruiserweight sits between Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight, currently holding a 200 lbs limit, ten north of its original 190.
After the WBC officially sanctioned a Cruiser’ bout in 1979, the WBA, WBO and IBF followed. The division went on to become a distinguished, exciting division in its own right, with some of its standout boxers managing to forge successful Heavyweight campaigns in the future.
Some of the greatest Cruiserweight boxers of all time include the likes of Oleksandr Usyk, Evander Holyfield, David Haye, James Toney, Johnny Nelson, Jean Marc Mormeck, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Virgil Hill, Guillermo Jones and Juan Carlos Gomez.
