What a messy week it’s been between the WBC and Miguel Cotto, who’s now been stripped of his Middleweight crown. Only Canelo will be eligible to take home the accolade this Saturday night, and should Cotto win, Gennady Golovkin will be automatically elevated to WBC King.
Words have been flying left, right and center. Cotto says the WBC’s hands have been far too deep in his pockets, while the WBC says it merely asked for the standard 3% purse fee (eventually capped down at $300,000). So who was to blame for making Cotto vs Canelo a (weird, sort of) non-title fight? Or was the whole thing just an ugly, grubby misunderstanding?
In all honesty, it could be one or more of the above. So I’m not judging, pointing the finger, or anything like that. Because, quite simply, I just don’t care anymore. Cotto vs Canelo is set to be a huge night in the 2015 boxing calendar, and right now I just want to enjoy what remains of the final build up.
I urge the boxing fandom to do the same, for your own sakes. As a fellow fight fan, I ask you to empty your mind of boxing’s alphabet titles, if only for one night, and to just use your own judgement when the action is over. If Cotto’s hand is raised, he’s the better man. If it’s Canelo, then he is! And none of us need to see someone wearing an expensive belt buckle to tell us that, do we?
So go on, don’t let this dark cloud eat away at a great weekend of boxing. Enjoy Cotto vs Canelo! Enjoy it because it’s a great fight!
