Cotto vs Alvarez - Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez fight almost a done dealCotto vs Alvarez Final Hurdle

It’s not a super fight per se, but Cotto vs Alvarez is a darn good match-up for fight fans. And all that remains before finalizing the bout, which would take place at 155 pounds, is to agree on the venue.

Of the many options, Las Vegas’ MGM Grand, The Wynn (partnering with Thomas & Mack Center), and New York’s Madison Square Garden are on the table. So what’s so complicated about picking a venue?

Apparently a whole lot. Both men and their teams have to consider tax implications and the multi-million dollar offers being made by each venue. For fight fans’ sakes, something as seemingly trivial as this – if we consider the exhaustive Mayweather vs Pacquiao negotiations – shouldn’t take too long to straighten out.

The date of the fight will differ depending on the chosen venue, which could influence HBO significantly. The MGM deal would lead to a November 7th clash, and The Wynn and Madison Square Garden a November 21st.

Miguel Cotto recently demolished Daniel Geale in June, and Canelo Alvarez also performed a similar number on James Kirkland in May.

Hopefully this last speed bump will be overcome with little difficulty very soon. We’ll have the latest.

Mosley Jr Tests Positive for Amphetamines

Shane Mosley Jr, son of ex-champion Shane Mosley, has been temporarily banned from professional boxing. The suspension was issued by the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) shortly after Mosley Jr scored a 1st round knockout of Jason Kelly on June 27th.

The 24-year-old fighter tested positive for amphetamines, which of course, is not good for the career of any sportsman. Especially for Mosley Jr, whose father tested positive for a banned substance following a fight with Oscar De La Hoya. Mosley Jr will now have to attend an August/September NSAC hearing, which could also result in a fine of $25,000.

Worst of all, Mosley Jr has had to pull out of his next two fights which were scheduled to support tomorrow’s Kovalev vs Mohammedi and (father) Mosley vs Mayorga in August. Both cards would have offered great exposure, especially the Kovalev fight. Mosley Jr currently holds a 4-1, 4 KO fight record.

Head back for more on this story as it unfolds.
