Maybe, and probably rather likely given Callum Smith’s promoter is the very persuasive Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing. Smith was only in action last weekend, blasting out fellow Liverpudlian Rocky Fielding in two minutes, but could now find himself supporting Klitschko vs Fury at the tail-end of November.
“He [Callum Smith] might box on the Klitschko-Fury card,” Hearn told Boxing News. “We’ll see, just trying to tie that up. If he boxes November 28, then he can go away in December and have a big fight in the spring.
“It’s three weeks away, it’ll be a decent international fight and some great exposure for him and the chance to keep the momentum.”
If Smith does find himself fighting, you have to wonder whether it’s necessarily a good thing. After his recent demolition job on a quality domestic fighter like Fielding, most fans would prefer to see the unbeaten standout step up another level.
But what ‘next level’ fighter is going to step into the ring with just two weeks notice? Regardless of who he gets, it will be a good business move for Hearn, who is no doubt looking to push Smith towards the world stage anyhow.
If you haven’t yet heard of Callum Smith, who currently stands at 17 wins, no defeats, 14 knockouts, you seriously need to check him out. Following his Unanimous Decision over the durable, tenacious Christopher Rebrasse, and his recent thrashing of unbeaten Fielding, he’s a Super Middleweight well worth your attention.
What’s your take on Smith possibly returning to the ring within a few weeks of the Fielding clash? Too soon? And will it most likely be a showcase fight to cultivate his international appeal beyond UK shores?
