The Return of Andre Ward – Again…
OK, technically Ward is already back. But, you know…forgive me for forgetting about June’s glorified sparring match that was the Paul Smith encounter. Anyway, Ward has signed a three-fight contract with broadcaster HBO, which, if dollars make sense, will hopefully lead to a 2016 showdown with wrecking machine, Sergey Kovalev.
Before the aforementioned fall clash, we’ll see Ward face Rohan Murdock – in short, a mediocre opponent – on the November 21st Cotto-Canelo bill. It’ll spice up the event with Ward in action, but it would’ve been great to see a Pound for Pound fighter like Ward hanging with more threatening opposition. Ah, well…moving on.
Chris Eubank Jr Fancies Chances Against ‘GGG’
It may sound laughable right now, considering Eubank Jr’s next test (if that’s the right word) is Tony Jeter, but the young Middleweight already feels he can exploit Golovkin’s flaws.
“Golovkin has got weaknesses that I feel I can exploit, so the goal is to work towards that fight. It’s a huge fight down the line,” Eubank told RingTV. “I think he’s easy to hit and I can exploit that. I don’t think he’s had a defining fight. I don’t think he’s fought anyone who’s really been there to try and win.”
Oh, but I think WBA champ David Lemieux did at the weekend. And, er…it ended in bloody, brain-rattling fashion.
Provodnikov To Take on Unbeaten Rodriguez
Ruslan Provodnikov will end his 7 month hiatus when he travels to Monte Carlo to face Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez, a fighter who’s had no problems remaining unbeaten against journeyman-types. Rodriguez will be putting his 13-0, 10 KO record on the line on November 7th, and will most likely be pummelled into oblivion by Provodnikov.
Juergen Braehmer and Thomas Oosthuizen were originally set to headline the card until an Oosthuzien hand-injury scrapped the WBA Light Heavyweight encounter.
