Gennady Golovkin Expecting Street Fight Next Week
In a recent press release, Gennady Golovkin will have won over even more boxing fans after he announced that he’s an old school throwback fighter who simply wants to behead (I mean ‘beat’) the Middleweight division’s finest.
“Training camp is a little bit new, a little bit different, not like any of the others,” Golovkin said. “New ideas and new strategies and it’s very interesting. We have different sparring partners because of his [Lemieux’s] style.
“Lemieux is a champion and he feels like a champion … I think he is ready for a unification fight and he understands the situation … This is going to be like a street fight. He has a good style – almost like amateur style. I will beat any style – amateur style or brawl style. He will be a good test for me.”
And who would Golovkin rather face among Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez?
“It doesn’t matter … For me? Whoever is number one. I want all of the belts in the middleweight division and I will fight whoever is number one and it doesn’t matter who it is. I don’t like business. I like old school – who is number one?”
Erislandy Lara Faces Jan Zaveck in November
We all know Erislandy Lara (21-2-2, 12 KO) is one of Cuba’s most refined exports, but his profile seems to remain stagnant while being fed mediocre opposition. At least since he began performing in PBC events lately, anyway. This could be because Lara is waiting on calls from the likes of Canelo Alvarez or another big name out there. Who knows?
Anyway, Lara will be back in action on November 25th on ESPN. The Junior Middleweight standout will be defending his WBA title against – drum roll not necessary – Jan Zaveck. So what’s to know about this seemingly unthreatening fighter? Zaveck’s biggest fights have resulted in losses to Andre Berto (2011), Rafal Jackiewicz (2008), and Keith Thurman (2013). He has clocked up a few wins since, however, albeit against non-contender types.
Oh, and Zaveck (35-3, 19 KO) is 39-years-young…
Victor Ortiz Charged With Assault
You remember Victor Ortiz, right? That guy who was once considered a force in boxing before he started all those dalliances with action flick roles? And who can forget the infamous defeat to Floyd Mayweather via sucker punch?
The former Welterweight star was recently charged with misdemeanour assault and battery following an apparent scuffle at a Kenny Chesney concert. Ortiz, who was charged along with his brother, has pleaded not guilty, and is due back in court in November.
Maybe this is a better headline than announcing he’s starring in The Expendables 4? Unless you, er…are a fan of geriatric action movies, that is.
Teddy Atlas’ Passion for Training Still Burning
He was a former trainer who now commentates on ESPN fight nights. Now he’s a trainer who also commentates. Yes, Teddy Atlas in back in the corner, now hoping to guide Timothy Bradley to victory against Brandon Rios on November 7th.
No easy task by any stretch of the imagination. But Atlas assures boxing fans he has what it takes to exorcise the ‘dog’ in his unpredictable boxer-come-brawler pupil, and is fired up to train once again.
“The juices are still flowing,” Atlas told RingTV. “When I got back in that setting, it reminded me of why I got into this all those years ago when I started as a 19-20-year-old kid with Cus D’Amato. It was for the purity of teaching.”
What’s your take on Gennady Golovkin’s throwback-style words, Erislandy Lara’s November encounter, and the rest of the day’s boxing news?
