Another busy weekend of boxing has just ended, and the word ‘showcase’ was rather fitting for the Buglioni vs Castaneda card. Not that we didn’t know that before it arrived.
Buglioni vs Castandeda
At the Wembley Arena, London, Frank Buglioni didn’t look sensational against replacement opponent Fernando Castaneda, but got the job done. Castaneda (23-10, 14 KO) was brought in to fill the rather large boots of WBA Super Middleweight champ Fedor Chudinov (who pulled out following a broken nose in sparring). Buglioni’s (17-1, 13 KO) somewhat overcautious performance against a bona fide journeyman won’t have impressed bookmakers ahead of his September 26th showdown with Chudinov. Buglioni knocked out Castaneda in the 5th.
Buglioni vs Castaneda Undercard
Chief support was provided by European Middleweight champ Billy Joe Saunders (22-0, 12 KO), who looked better in his low-risk fight against Yoann Bloyer. The fight seemed to exist purely to keep Saunders active ahead of his September 19th clash with WBO Middleweight champ Andy Lee. It is what it is, but at least Saunders acknowledged Bloyer was “no Sugar Ray Leonard” post fight. Saunders dominated in every area, eventually taking Bloyer (17-28, 3 KO) out in the 5th.
Also on the card, vicious up-and-comer Mitchell Smith took out Dennis Tubieron in the 1st round. Jamie Cox and Dereck Chisora also scored opening round night-enders.
