Adrien Broner Back in October
If you’re a fan of Adrien Broner, you’ll be glad to hear he’ll be returning to the ring on October 3rd. At the U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, the three-weight champion will be chasing another: the vacant WBA Junior Welterweight strap. His opponent across the ring will be Khabib Allakhverdiev, a tricky counter-puncher and southpaw who is perhaps capable of asking some questions. There’s something a little fishy about this affair, however; Broner lost a wide decision to Shawn Porter back in June, yet has landed feet first in a world title fight? Mmm…
Anyway, for it’s worth, it will be good to see Broner (30-2, 22 KO) back in the ring. Many might disagree, but there’s an equal amount of people who are still eager to see if the Cincinnati-native can fulfill his potential (assuming he hasn’t already peaked, that is). Will the brash fighter be keen to do a number on Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9 KO) to reboot his career and reputation?
Anthony Crolla Gets His Wish
British hearts went out to Anthony Crolla when he came up short on the cards against Darleys Perez (32-1-1, 20 KO) in July. After a controversial Draw was reached, Perez returned home with the WBA Lightweight crown, leaving Crolla (29-4-3, 11 KO) and his Mancunian fans heavily disappointed. Ah, the wonders of boxing scorecards. But luckily for Crolla, the WBA has answered his prayers, offering the Manchester fighter a second shot at capturing their prestigious title. Crolla vs Perez II will headline a Manchester card on November 21st. And if it’s anything like their first encounter, it should be well worth the attention of fight fans.
Zab Judah is Back…Again!
Zab Judah (42-9, 29 KO) will be making another comeback. The former champion, now 37, hasn’t fought since losing to Paulie Malignaggi in December 2013, but will climb back through the ropes to face Hevinson Herrera (18-11-1, 12 KO). We’re not going to say too much about this match-up. Because, well it’s not exactly pulse-raising stuff. Plus Santa Cruz-Mares will be starting soon. Judah-Herrera will take place in Westbury, New York, on September 10th, and will be Judah’s first bout under Greg Cohen Promotions.
Kenny Bayless to Work Mayweather-Berto
If you’re a serious boxing head, you might be wondering: who’s officiating Mayweather vs Berto? Well wonder no more. The NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) has appointed Kenny Bayless to oversee the action at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. The referee has worked countless world title bouts, and interestingly, worked seven of Mayweather’s, including his first professional bout way back in 1996. Judges ringside will be Adalaide Byrd and Dave Moretti from Las Vegas, joined by New Yorker Steve Weisfeld.
What’s your take on Adrien Broner’s return and Anthony Crolla’s shot at settling the score with Darleys Perez?
