It’s just the latest absurd idea to come out of Amir Khan’s mouth. The Welterweight contender is still chasing – well, sort of – a fight with Floyd Mayweather, and believes beating Manny Pacquiao could make him the new best pound for pound fighter in the world.
“I think Manny Pacquiao would be the priority because I don’t know how long he has got left in his career, I think he would be the first fight to take,” Khan told The Bolton News.
“Manny P was probably number two pound-for-pound so by fighting him and beating him, it might get me to be the number one pound for pound fighter and then you get someone like Floyd Mayweather who might say I will come out of retirement and fight him – imagine that.”
Ah, where to begin? As if it isn’t irritating enough hearing Amir Khan mention Floyd Mayweather’s name yet again, the guy believes beating Manny Pacquiao could get him closer to Mayweather. And as for the pound for pound No.1 spot, Khan simply cannot get there by bypassing all nine of the other Welterweight Top 10 fighters. He has so far avoided all 10.
Khan is yet to crack any pound for pound lists, and yes, fighting the likes of Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri haven’t helped his cause.
And as for beating Pacquiao, how big would that win really be? Maybe a few years back it would’ve been considered impressive – but not against today’s 36-year-old, injured, twilight-of-his-career Pacquiao.
I apologize, readers. I usually refrain from ranting, but this and the Klitschko vs Fury news has killed my inhibitions today. What a Friday killer!
So, Amir Khan vs Manny Pacquiao, anyone? And what about Khan’s chances of luring Mayweather out of retirement? Or you can just chime in with your thoughts on Klitschko vs Fury. That’s far more interesting, as we at least know – or surely hope – that fight will happen.
