Later this evening, Devon Alexander will be trying to get back to winning ways when he takes on Aron Martinez at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. In the co-support, which should’ve possibly been top of the bill, Britain’s Lee Selby will be taking on former three-weight champ Fernando Montiel.
On the scales, all the fighters looked in fantastic shape and ready to do battle. Alexander weighed in at 146.9 lbs, and Martinez 147.1 for their Welterweight encounter. Selby came in at 125.8 lbs, and veteran Montiel 125.6 for their Featherwieght clash.
Now, I must admit I originally foresaw Selby vs Montiel as being competitive, especially given Montiel’s vast experience in the sport. But after I saw this pair facing off, I was stunned at the height difference between them. Montiel, who has spent the majority of his career at Bantamweight, gives away a staggering 4.5 inches, which means he could well take a serious beating in this encounter. I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but this showdown looks to have ‘dangerous pairing’ written all over it.
Alexander vs Martinez is set for 10 rounds, while Selby’s first defense of the IBF Featherweight title, captured from Evgeny Gradovich in May, is set to go the full 12. Alexander, who was dominated by Amir Khan in his last outing, comes in at 26 wins, 14 knockouts, 3 defeats, while Martinez carries 19 wins, 4 knockouts, 4 defeats, 1 draw. Selby brings 21 wins, 8 knockouts, 1 defeat, to his US debut, while the seasoned Montiel carries 54 wins, 39 knockouts, 4 defeats, 2 draws.
How do you see Alexander vs Martinez and Selby vs Montiel playing out, boxing fans?
