This weekend was literally packed full of boxing, so consider this a quick recap of major/noteworthy boxing results only, folks. If you’re after a full report, see the link following each fight card, or see our bite-size Boxing Results.
Stevenson vs Karpency
On Friday in Toronto, Canada, Adonis Stevenson did what everyone expected him to, taking out overmatched Tommy Karpency inside 3 rounds. Karpency deserves a lot of credit for making the most of his Light Heavyweight championship opportunity, taking the fight to Stevenson and landing a number of clean shots. But it was Stevenson who answered every punch, scoring his first knockdown at the close of the 2nd round, and then closed shop after scoring the second in the 3rd. The referee took a good look at Karpency and waved it off.
On the undercard, Erroll Spence also put in an explosive performance, taking out a game Chris Van Heerden in the 8th round. The Welterweight affair was controlled by Spence from the opening bell, and saw him land far too many thudding power shots for Heerden to withstand. Heerden more than earned his money, however, getting in some scoring shots of his own, including a decent body assault, but ultimately got picked off. Heerden was knocked down twice in the 7th, and finally saved by the referee in the 8th. Catch Stevenson vs Karpency Highlights.
Joshua vs Cornish
Saturday’s London action was headlined by Anthony Joshua, who managed to derail the senses of Gary Cornish in just 97 seconds. The unbeaten Cornish was dropped by a counter right-hand, and again shortly after by a left-hook. This was another massacre executed by one of the Heavyweight division’s finest upcoming fighters. Joshua picks up the Commonwealth Heavyweight strap in the process. See our Joshua vs Cornish Full Report.
The co-feature saw John Wayne Hibbert stop rival Dave Ryan in the 10th round. After a cagey start from both men, the fight finally opened up when Ryan dropped Hibbert with a body shot in the 6th. Ryan then took firm control of the fight, bossing the action, and landing the more telling punches. But then in the 10th, Ryan motioned to his corner about lower back pain. Hibbert noticed the wincing and subsequently pounced on his man, forcing the referee to soon step in. Hibbert now becomes the new Commonwealth Junior Welterweight champ.
Dillian Whyte made relatively easy work of a very game yet dwarfed natural Cruiserweight in Brian Minto, scoring a 3rd round TKO. Surprisingly, Whyte was clipped with a number of shots during the short-lived encounter, which saw Minto knocked down in the 1st and for the final time in the 3rd round. Minto, who stood five inches shorter than Whyte, decided to not get up. And no one will judge him too harshly for calling it a night. Joshua vs Whyte will now go ahead for December. Quillin vs Zerafa
In Mashantucket, Connecticut, Peter Quillin‘s overmatched opponent Michael Zerafa was knocked out in disturbing fashion in the 5th. Though Zerafa was eventually able to respond to the ringside physician following the sledge-hammer right-hand, the fighter was stretchered out of the ring. It was upsetting to see, and reminded us all of the far too real perils in boxing. Quillin is back on the scene with this Middleweight victory, but refused to celebrate post fight given the circumstances, which was admirable. We wish Zerafa a full recovery.
IBF Junior Middleweight veteran Cornelius Bundrage was knocked down a staggering four times by Jermall Charlo in the night’s appetiser. Bundrage was in all kinds of trouble, being bossed and brutalized from the opening bell by the younger, savvier, cool-headed Charlo. Catch Quillin vs Zerafa Highlights.
Mayweather vs Berto
In Las Vegas, Nevada, Floyd Mayweather did what was expected against Andre Berto. But it wasn’t all ‘easy money’. Berto, who put in a very spirited performance, bagged a few of the rounds, making the previously perceived ‘glorified sparring match’ an actual fight. Mayweather won a Unanimous Decision from scores of 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108, and sounded adamant of retirement when interviewed post fight. Farewell, ‘Money’.
Mayweather vs Berto, though fairly decent, was no match for the absorbing, action-packed undercard. George Groves may have been the favorite to leave with the WBC Super Middleweight crown, but he was up against it when he stepped into the ring with the solid Badou Jack. Groves demonstrated a lightning jab throughout, coupled with a refined artillery, but looked the more troubled of the two, particularly during the later rounds. See our Mayweather vs Berto Full Report.
Jack showed his intentions in just the 1st round, knocking down Groves with a right-hand to the temple. But Groves beat the count, and forced the titleholder to fight it out for another 11 rounds, some of which were neck-and-neck. Scores came in at 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111, awarding Jack a Split Decision, but there’s a good chance we could see these two going at it again in a near future rematch. See our Full Mayweather vs Berto Undercard Boxing Results Report.
Roman Martinez and Orlando Salido did exactly what was advertised, producing an absolute slugfest over the course of 12 rounds. In an exhausting to watch barnburner, the two warriors both scored a knockdown in the 2nd, and then fought toe-to-toe en route to a Split Draw via scores of 115-113, 113-115 and 114-114. Martinez of course holds onto his WBO Junior Lightweight strap.
