Boxing heads knew this fight had a great chance of materializing, and it’s now official. Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs will be putting it all on the line on December 5th at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York.
This is a solid match-up, and there’s not really an argument against it – unless you really are the pickiest of boxing fans. If you crave firepower and will be putting your life on hold during Golovkin vs Lemieux, then Quillin vs Jacobs will come as double helpings of Middleweight TNT this year.
The Showtime Sports broadcast will be see Jacobs (30-1, 27 KO) put his WBA belt on the line. The Brooklyn-native was savagely knocked out by Dmitry Pirog back in 2010, but has since bounced back with plentiful knockouts, even beating bone cancer along the way.
Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KO) is still looking sharp as ever, despite having to settle for a Draw against Andy Lee back in April. Quillin, a former Middleweight champ, was judged far too harshly following the fight, which he actually edged in my eyes, and was subsequently guided into a dangerous tune-up against Michael Zerafa last month to recover.
When I say dangerous, I mean for the awfully overmatched Zerafa who was blasted into oblivion – and then some – in the 5th round. Ugly, ugly stuff.
Anyway, Quillin vs Jacobs looks to be a true test for both men – perhaps the more so for Jacobs. With a combined 50 knockouts between them, this should be explosive. They’re also fairly close in Boxing Base’s Middleweight world rankings; Quillin is currently riding the No.4 spot, while Jacobs isn’t trailing too far behind at No.7.
Oh, and let’s not forget that the winner here would likely be paired up with the winner of Golovkin vs Lemieux. Now there’s some food for thought.
Who are you picking in this one, folks? Peter Quillin or Daniel Jacobs?
