Everyone wants to know who Floyd Mayweather will be taking on in his September 12th farewell bout before retiring. So, Mayweather vs Berto, anyone? No? No one at all…?
The feeling is mirrored here at BoxingBase.com. And we’re guessing Amir Khan and a host of other fighters, like Keith Thurman and Kell Brook, aren’t too pleased about the inclusion of this new Mayweather lottery entrant.
There’s something a little awry about an Andre Berto match-up, and it’s doubtful the former Welterweight champion will actually share the ring come September. Mayweather, assuming he still cares about money and legacy, would not want to dance with a 2nd tier fighter such as he. Or so you’d think right now.
Berto has some solid wins to his name, but he is by far the weakest potential opponent to crop up. Berto struggled with 147-pound gatekeeper, Jesus Soto Karass, and was eventually stopped in the 12th round (2013). The Florida-born fighter was also handed defeats in a life-and-death battle with fringe contender Robert Guerrero (2012), and in another with the more capable Victor Ortiz (2011).
This ‘talk’ could just be a clever ploy to make an eventual clash with Amir Khan seem even more tantalizing, it would seem. Most of us would ideally prefer to see Mayweather vs Golovkin, but that’s highly unlikely now. The next best thing is therefore Khan (or Thurman, Brook) – and if the alternative is Berto, then Mayweather vs any of the above suddenly seems like a super fight.
It’s all speculation at this stage, of course. But we’ll soon know who ‘TBA’ is after Mayweather makes the official announcement sometime next week.
So what do we think, fight fans? Mayweather vs Berto giving you goose bumps…? Just to be clear, this isn’t a late April Fools!
