The official public sale hadn’t even begun, but it didn’t stop boxing fans clamoring for tickets during Madison Square Garden’s two-day presale. A remarkable 6000 have been sold for the upcoming Golovkin-Lemieux, which means presale records have now been broken – proof that this is one of the year’s most anticipated events.
Overall ticket sales for Golovkin-Lemieux has beaten two other strong sellers: Klitschko-Jennings‘ 17,056 in April, and Cotto-Margarito II’s 21,239 in 2011.
“Fans have responded by showing their support for this show,” Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions said. “We priced the tickets very reasonably and will put on a great show for them Oct 17. We have been trying to get another champion to fight GGG, and David Lemieux is the first to agree to risk his title, so we give him and Golden Boy a lot of credit.”
This is an event that needed but a nudge to get the ball rolling; two of the division’s finest, and two of boxing’s hardest hitters going toe-to-toe. Plus a tasty Gonzalez-Viloria appetizer. A lot of tickets are shifting, and we could well be looking at a sold out Madison Square Garden come October.
Is this fight also about to break HBO’s PPV records? Or does ol’ Mayweather – the King of PPV – have nothing to worry about?
