Ahead of Wilder vs Molina this weekend, the Heavyweight giant has revealed he is ready to step into Floyd Mayweather’s shoes as the king-pin of boxing. Many fight fans are seeing the Molina fight as more of a Wilder showcase than serious Heavyweight title defense. Wilder is expected to win big, and will be looking to blast out Molina to generate a huge audience for a potential clash with Wladimir Klitschko or Tyson Fury.
Well, maybe. Boxing politics and all that permitted…
“Floyd Mayweather seems to be coming to the end,” Wilder said. “Boxing needs me to take over. I believe I can be the exciting new face. It’s also time to bring back the undisputed heavyweight championship to America, where it belongs.”
Big words from a big man. And there are many out there who believe that dream is possible. With Klitschko flaking in his last bout with Mike Jennings, Klitschko is a multi-belted champion who could be ready for the taking.
“…Klitschko and his team did not want one of their prospective opponents to be taken out of the mix by me beating Tyson,” he went on. “That’s OK with me because a fight with either of them – Wladimir in America or Fury in the UK – will be huge.”
Wilder is likely to get a crack at both Klitschko and Fury at some point given his mainstream appeal. Wilder is a huge name and truly feels he is ready to bring back the glamor to the ‘glamor division’. But across the pond, another giant Heavyweight on the rise has also chimed in. His name is Anthony Joshua, and he’s also confident of his abilities and future in the sport.
“There is a big fight out there for me if David Haye makes his comeback,” Joshua said. “But I would be happy to meet Deontay before that. He has raw power but I believe I’m a better boxer,” said Joshua.
The Brit’s amateur pedigree certainly gives him an edge in the skill department. And Joshua has tremendous power to boot. Coupled together, could he be the man to take down Wilder and end all hopes of a US unified champion emerging?
So there it is. Three big names. Wilder. Klitschko. Fury. Joshua. But is Wilder the man to blaze through them all? Is he the future and ‘savior’ of the Heavyweight division? Get discussing!
