Ahead of David Lemieux’s October 17th clash with Gennady Golovkin, the Canadian powerhouse has made his intentions very clear. Lemieux isn’t traveling to New York’s Madison Square Garden to fight Golovkin – he’s going there to beat the guy, take his belts, and cause a major upset.
The 160-pounder was recently asked who the biggest names in the division are right now. And Lemieux was well aware of the competition he is rubbing shoulders with.
“There are a lot of good middleweights out there,” he told Boxing News. “It has always been a deep division in talent. This is why the middleweight division has always been a division with so much prestige. The winner of this fight, yes, he will definitely deserve the distinction of being the best in the world. That will be me.”
Four Middleweight names got a mention – but they were that of Lemieux himself, his October foe, and two ex-champions who once produced a barn-burner for the ages.
“It’s also an honor that this fight is being compared to the great [Marvin] Hagler-[Thomas] Hearns fight,” Lemieux continued. “But I’m not just going to New York to fight Golovkin, I’m going there to beat him. For those people who make me the underdog, they better get ready because on October 17 I will shock the world.”
Lemieux believes it, and there will be a lot of people tuning in to see if he can do the seemingly impossible. Before the fireworks start, a three-city media tour will be taking place. Press conferences will be held at:
- Madison Square Garden, New York – August 18th
- Guzzo Movie Theater, Quebec, Canada – August 19th
- The Conga Room at LA Live, Los Angeles – August 20th
Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux is certainly building a lot of anticipation – but is it capable of producing another Hagler vs Hearns?
