Unbeaten Leo Santa Cruz has faced tough criticism over the years, mostly for failing to dance with top-tier opposition. If you’re one of his detractors, or are somewhat skeptical of his status in boxing, you’ll be pleased to know a true test is on the horizon. That test will come in the form of Abner Mares on August 29th at the Los Angeles’ Staple’s Center.
The PBC on ESPN event will reveal if Mares (29-1-1, 15 KO) is still a force at Featherweight, and of course, if Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KO) is the real deal.
Mares, a three-weight titlist, lost his WBC strap to Jhonny Gonzalez via a 1st round KO shocker in 2013. Following the upset, Mares has gradually rebuilt, his latest victory being a Unanimous Decision over Arturo Reyes in March. Mares put in an underwhelming performance that night, but said post-fight he had been battling illness during his camp.
“I’m really excited for this fight, it’s a fight the fans have been asking for and I’m ready to give them what they want — a great show and a great victory,” Mares told RingTV. “L.A. is my home, I train here, grew up here and I’m ready to show this city and the world that I am the champ.”
Cruz, a two-weight world champion, won his second title by dethroning Victor Terrazas of the WBC Junior Featherweight crown in 2013. After four defenses, Cruz climbed to Featherweight where he won a Unanimous Decision over Jose Cayetano in May.
“This fight means so much to me because I know it is what the fans have been waiting for,” said Santa Cruz. “The opportunity to fight at Staples Center against a Mexican warrior and great fighter in Abner Mares is one that I plan on taking very seriously. We have been preparing for this moment for a very long time and I’m so glad it’s finally here. A win is going to take one of us to the next level.”
