An explosive fight between Junior Featherweights Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg could still be on the table. IBF champ Carl Frampton, who defeated Alejandro Gonzalez last weekend, recently said he’s open to fighting Quigg, and in his backyard to boot. But the Northern Ireland fighter said Quigg better know who the A-side fighter is at the negotiating table.
“The message is bring it on if you want, but remember who the A-side fighter here is,” Frampton told BBC Radio. “When you come to negotiate you can’t be making too many demands. If he really wants the fight I’m happy to fight him in his own backyard, but we just need to remember who’s the boss when it comes to negotiating.”
The news isn’t going to give fight fans goose bumps just yet, but it’s a positive start. Both men, who hold world titles, represent the A-side here, and we’re sure that’s how the fighters themselves see it. Cyclone Promotions, Al Haymon and Matchroom Sports will certainly see it that way. Which already stinks of conflict and complications.
But let’s be positive. Frampton has at least made some headway already by granting Quigg, who recently blew out Kiko Martinez in just 2 rounds, a hometown advantage. Frampton also said he’s open to the fight at 122 pounds, even though there is speculation he might move up in weight soon.
The longer this fight is delayed, the greater the anticipation will be – as long as both men continue to put in good performances, that is. We just hope we don’t have another Mayweather vs Pacquiao situation on our hands here…
