Oscar Valdez vs Ruben Tamayo
Round 1: Both men feeling each other out in the opener, but Valdez is getting off the better shots. Tamayo knocks down Valdez with right-hand! Valdez doesn’t seem hurt, was perhaps off balance? Tamayo, 9-9
Round 2: Valdez looking for the single right-hand, looking sharp. Loading up with shots, but Tamayo knows his way round the ring. Valdez, 10-9 (19-18)
Round 3: Valdez selective with his shots, patient but lacing them with poison. Picking them well, timing them well. Boos from the crowd, clearly wanting more action. Close-range exchange favors Valdez. Right-hand from Valdez. And another. Valdez, 10-9 (29-27)
Round 4: Again, Valdez is looking like the superior operator, just picking his punches better. Valdez planting his feet more, dancing less. Tamayo starting to look outclassed, but hasn’t been staggered by anything as of yet. Right-hand from Valdez, now becoming more mobile and elusive. Right-hand, seemingly his money punch. Valdez, 10-9 (39-36)
Round 5: Valdez loving the right-hand over and over again in this fight. And why not? It’s landing frequently. Valdez looking confident, landing more leather, and shining in that ring. Valdez 10-9 (49-45)
Round 6: Valdez coming on strong, throwing with vicious intent. Landing from the outside and in close-range. Good stuff. Right-hand. Tamayo’s defense causing Valdez to miss – a strength which has allowed him to not sustain a beating so far in this fight. Valdez, 10-9 (59-54)
Round 7: Valdez landing and dominating, but not sitting down on his punches enough to do serious damage. Tamayo loses a point for low blow. One-sided action resumes. Valdez, 10-8 (69-62)
Round 8: Five-punch straight combination from Valdez. Tamayo warned for another lowish blow. Left-hook, right-hand combination from Valdez. Nice work in close from Valdez. Valdez, 10-9 (79-71)
Round 9: This is now a completely one-sided affair, with Valdez doing everything but stopping Tamayo. Exhibition-type stuff. Valdez, 10-9 (89-80)
Round 10: Valdez going for knockout, throwing a lot of leather at Tamayo. Can’t finish him off. Big left-hook on rope-bound Tamayo. Going for the knockout without question, but looking wild. Tamayo’s right eye swelling. Valdez off balance following wild, missing hooks. Valdez, 10-9 (99-89)
Result: Valdez wins via Unanimous Decision – 98-90 (twice), 99-90
