Join us for a quick roundup of Vegas weekend action featuring Kovalev vs Mohammedi, Pascal vs Gonzalez, and more.
Kovalev vs Mohammedi
Nobody was expecting much resistance from Nadjib Mohammedi, and the Frenchman didn’t upset that prediction. Sergey Kovalev’s (28-0-1, 25 KO) numerous title’s were never in danger of leaving his waist at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, as he comfortably destroyed his challenger inside three brutal, uncompetitive rounds. After the Russian scored his third knockdown of the fight, he motioned for his opponent to rise for more. Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KO) didn’t fancy it – and we don’t blame him.
Kovalev vs Mohammedi Undercard
If the main event was an awful mismatch, the chief support certainly wasn’t. In a battle of experience versus youth, Jean Pascal (30-3-1, 17 KO) and Yunieski Gonzalez put on a hell of a show for Vegas fight fans. Gonzalez (16-1, 12 KO) played the bull, constantly steaming forward and putting his fight-changing power to good use, while Pascal let his elite footwork and zipping hand speed score and do damage. This was an action-packed 10-rounder to say the least, and though the verdict is splitting opinion, we had no qualms scoring it 96-94 for Pascal (thrice reached by the judges).
Also on the HBO televised event, Sullivan Barrera stopped Hakim Zoulikha in the 8th round, and Joel Diaz Jr stopped Alejandro Rodriguez in the 4th.
